The cycle is so familiar it has become a kind of ritual. You see a cockroach, you buy a can, you spray along the skirting boards and under the sink, and for a few glorious days the kitchen is yours again. Then they come back. It is tempting to conclude that you simply did not use enough, or that these particular roaches are unusually stubborn. The truth is stranger and more interesting. The roach that learned to hate sugar
Start with one of the most remarkable pieces of evolution ever documented in a household pest. For years, the standard way to poison a cockroach was to hide a toxin inside something sweet, because a cockroach loves glucose the way the rest of us love a free dessert. It worked beautifully, right up until it stopped. Beginning in the 1990s, pest controllers noticed that sweet baits were quietly failing, and when scientists investigated they found something astonishing. A population of German cockroaches had evolved so that glucose, the sugar in the bait, now registered on their tongues as bitter. The trap still smelled like dinner and tasted like poison, so the roaches took one bite and walked away in disgust. They had not learned to survive the poison. They had learned to refuse the plate. More recent work suggests some are now developing the same aversion to other sugars, which is evolution happening fast enough to watch inside a single kitchen.
Resistance is not a rumour
The same story plays out with the sprays themselves. The common household insecticides have been used so widely, for so long, that cockroaches carrying a natural resistance to them have been steadily bred into the majority. Every time you spray and a few survive, those few are the ones with the tougher biology, and they are the ones who breed the next generation. Do this for enough years, across enough homes, and you produce roaches that shrug off the very chemicals designed to kill them. You are not imagining that the spray works less well than it used to. You are watching natural selection operate on your kitchen floor, and you have been an unwitting participant in it.
The eggs that survive the whole ordeal
Even a perfectly effective spray would leave you with a problem, because a spray kills the roaches you can see and does very little to the next generation already waiting in the wings. A female cockroach carries her eggs in a hard, purse-shaped case called an ootheca, which she tucks into a crack or glues to the underside of a shelf. That case is remarkably good at shrugging off insecticide. So you spray, you kill the adults, you feel victorious, and a week or two later a fresh cohort hatches from a dozen egg cases the spray never touched, and the whole thing begins again.
The spray that scatters instead of kills
There is a final, almost comic problem. Many household sprays are what pest controllers call repellents, which means the roaches can sense them and actively avoid the treated surface. Instead of walking through your neat line of insecticide and dying, they detect it, turn around, and disperse into new parts of the home you had not thought to treat. You have not reduced the infestation. You have redecorated it, sending roaches from behind the fridge into the bedroom, and giving yourself two problems where you started with one.
Working with the biology instead of against it
The way out is to stop fighting the roach on the ground it has already conquered.
